WANA (Sep 18) – The Deputy Coordinator of the Army’s Air Defense Force announced upgrades to the Karrar UAV, enhancing radar and optical capabilities under the Rasoul project, and transforming it into a network-enabled platform in under a year.

 

Brigadier General Mohammad Yousufi Khoshghalb revealed ongoing efforts to equip UAVs with radar and optical systems for electronic warfare, communication relays, and airborne radar functions.

 

He also reported the establishment of a space command center capable of tracking space-based targets like ballistic missiles, with plans to expand its anti-ballistic missile defense.

 

The general highlighted improvements in the Karrar drone’s altitude and range, noting that it can now carry multiple types of missiles.

 

He emphasized the diversity of air defense systems and the development of laser defense technologies to counter threats like small drones and cruise missiles.

The Karrar UAV, developed by Iran Aircraft Manufacturing Industries (HESA), was officially unveiled on Defense Industry Day in 2010. It is a multi-purpose, turbojet-powered drone that has been deployed across various military units of the Army and the IRGC.

 

As Iran’s first experience in building a jet-engine UAV, Karrar also holds the distinction of being the country’s first combat drone capable of carrying a wide range of weapons. All versions of the Karrar are launched using a rail system with solid-fuel boosters and land using parachutes and airbags.
